Data sources and attribution

My Dog Rules brings together public information from councils, government agencies, and open-data projects, then does its own work on top - checking, structuring, summarising, and mapping it. This page names the sources that information comes from and the licences we rely on. Your freedom to obtain any of this material from the original public source is unaffected by our Terms.

Council dog bylaws and policies

Dog-access rules in the Service are derived from each council's dog control bylaw and policy documents. Council bylaws are excluded from copyright under section 27 of the Copyright Act 1994; council policy documents are the copyright of the council concerned and are used with attribution. The summaries, structure, and map presentation are our own work. Rules can change - the council's own published documents, linked below, are always the authoritative source.

Toitū Te Whenua - Land Information New Zealand

Coastline, beach, lake, property-parcel, and place-name data is sourced from the LINZ Data Service and licensed for reuse under the CC BY 4.0 licence. Protected-areas data is sourced from the LINZ Data Service and licensed for reuse under the CC BY 3.0 New Zealand licence - Crown copyright reserved.

Department of Conservation

Public conservation land boundaries and dog-friendly walk, track, and campsite information are sourced from the Department of Conservation and used with attribution; where DOC publishes data under a Creative Commons licence we comply with its terms. DOC's own pages remain the authoritative source for conservation-land dog rules.

Herenga ā Nui Aotearoa - Walking Access

Additional parks-and-reserves boundary data is sourced from Herenga ā Nui Aotearoa - the Outdoor Access Commission and used with attribution.

OpenStreetMap

Some geographic data in the Service - including map data shown via Mapbox and location data derived through Nominatim geocoding - is © OpenStreetMap contributors, made available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL).

Venue and place data

Venue and public-toilet locations draw on data from the Overture Maps Foundation (used under its open licences) and Mapbox search services, supplemented by our own checking. Base maps and search are supplied by Mapbox, with attribution shown on every map in the Service. Some location search and address lookup is provided by Google.

Weather

Weather forecasts are provided by Open-Meteo under the CC BY 4.0 licence.

Hazard and safety advisories in the Service summarise material published by councils and by national authorities, including:

Individual advisories link to their source where one is shown on the record. Advisories are a guide to what to look for - not an all-clear; always follow official warnings on the ground.
